Glock Smith Wesson - The Glock G45 and Smith & Wesson M&P 9 2.0 Compact are two of the most popular handguns on the market today. There is a reason for this. They are both fantastic. But is one better than the other? Technically no... but personally yes. Let's find out why.
Both of these tools come highly recommended by two people I respect: a former colleague, Ben Brown, carries a G45 as his EDC; In his review he says the G45 is the Glock no one asked for. In fact, it has been invented and has become a staple of the Glock line. When it hit the market in 2018, many were surprised. Essentially, it combines the best of both worlds – the barrel and slide of the G19 with the grip of the G17. Ironically, it is now considered by many to be the best Glock ever made.

Mission First Tactical Smith & Wesson M&p 1.0, 2.0, Plus
The M&P 9 was recommended by another friend of mine Rod Ryan. He is a former LEO and trains both law enforcement and the military. He has an M&P as his EDC. I did some extensive shooting with him in 2017 and he raved about his M&Ps.
It has been around since 2005 and was originally designed for the military and police, hence the name, M&P. Since then it has become a favorite of people who like capable, reliable and accurate hands.

Both 9mm arms are very similar in terms of MSRP, features and 17+1 capacity. The M&P is two ounces heavier than the G45 unloaded at 26.7 ounces. The barrel on the M&P is a quarter of an inch longer at 4.25 inches. But at 7.4 both are almost the same overall length. inches. The width and height of both guns are almost identical at 1.3 inches and 5.5 inches respectively.

One thing I will note is that of my two tests from the site's certified pre-owned section, the G45 came with a set of Trijicon Bright & Toughsights installed on it by the previous owner. These parts are amazing and may have slightly affected the outcome of this review. TheM&P comes with stock sights, which are decent right off the bat. Other than that, both are stocks.
It felt exactly the same in both hands as it looked the same on paper. The biggest difference right away is the grip texture on the M&P. It's very aggressive and I really like it. I felt the Glock could benefit from more grip texture.
The controls are exactly the same and I found them fine. The release of the slide is ambivalent about both. Monthly posting is reversible on both. Both chamber indicators are loaded, but in slightly different positions. Both have front serrations which I like. I found the Glock's recoil spring stiffer than the S&W's, making press checks and slide racks a little difficult.

After loading 250 rounds of Federal 115 grain 9mm ammo into each gun, both performed flawlessly. But this is where personal preferences come into play.
At 15 yards I shoot slightly better with the Glock. Not sure why - I just did. Maybe it was the upgraded locations, but I don't think so. It felt a little better in my hands. Maybe it's a result of the size and shape of my hands.
I will say that I'm not a fan of gun scandals either. They want a lot. It was long and squishy. If I could slow down my shot and rest the trigger loosely against the wall and then continue my shot, my accuracy was very acceptable. However, firing quickly from a ready drawer, the long trigger pull affected my accuracy.
This is where a lot of practice will come in handy. Ben Brown shoots his G45 very accurately with the stock trigger. Rod Ryan, however, upgraded his M&P to an Apex trigger.

What's great about both the G45 and the M&P is that there are many aftermarket parts available. I personally don't like buying a gun that I have to immediately put money into to make improvements, but it's nice to be able to "fine tune" them.
That said, both could definitely benefit from some mods. As I mentioned, Rod Ryan upgraded his M&P trigger. Ben Brown runs RMR on his G45. I could probably make both of these mods myself. And if I were to choose a Glock, I would add a lot more grip texture.
Note that if you want to add one of these RMR ethers, be sure to purchase the latest optic-ready model.

I can't say that one gun is better than the other. They are both fantastic options and I think you will be happy with either one. But for my own personal preference, the Glock comes out slightly on top. That being said, I recommend trying out a gun before you buy it.
